How To Support Parenting Employees Post-Covid


I have spent almost 3 years now talking about babies in the workplace and the struggles of working parents, more specifically working moms. I have 2 young children of my own who have been to meetings of every size, sat in on interviews, and slept in my arms while I responded to messages and emails.


With the onset of Covid-19, the world of work as we know it took a major shift. Parents as employers and employees are forced to change the way business is done to accommodate the fact that schools and daycares are shut down. With the spread of the virus appearing to slow down and businesses starting to re-open, what should employers be doing to maintain productivity as we take another shift in our economy ?


This is an area I want to help with. I want to help businesses adopt long term policies to support their parenting employees as we continue to navigate unchartered territories with e-learning, and social distancing in schools.


If you are ready to make a shift in your business, ask yourself these questions.


1) Is your business one that CAN function with staff working from home?


2) Does your business require staff to work set hours?


3) If staff are coming back into the physical place of work, is there a space someone could work with a child in tow?


4) Is there a daycare nearby? Or could one be put onsite?


5) How does the logistical support tie into emotional support?


Obviously the situation is different for each business as to what is possible and how to do it, but that’s what I am here for. I want to be part of the solution that helps businesses not only survive in a post-civil world, but thrive in it. I want to help maintain employee retention and improve employee satisfaction when so many people are struggling right now.


Trying to navigate the world of work going forward will be met with so many changes and challenges, why not do what we can to support families? Families will be challenged more than ever when trying to find the balance between the demands of life at home vs the demands of their jobs.


There are even articles starting to surface indicating that many parents (mainly mothers) will be forced to leave their jobs, or work part-time in a post-covid world because the demands of childcare, schooling, etc will be too much to manage with traditional hours at a full time job.
