MLM: A Business for Mom's

Updated: Feb 22, 2019

This is a post I have been thinking about writing for some time. Since my early twenties, I have known countless people who signed up for one MLM (multi-level marketing) company or another. I have a number of friends who have sold, and some who continue to sell Mary Kay, Avon, Arbonne, Melaleuca, Tupperware, Rodan & Fields, and Young Living.

Many have started on their MLM journey with the promise of low start-up costs, the ability to make your own schedule, and the ability to make a career out of it as you move up the ladder. What many did not realize until after starting on their journey is that making sales is tough no matter what industry you are in, and the MLM companies are flooded with people, all hoping to move up the chain and make money. Because of this, most of the women I know have since quit working with their respective MLM companies.

This is not to say that MLM businesses are bad, they appear as a lucrative option for women trying to raise a family and contribute to the household income. For some women, this does turn into a sustainable career, with countless hours of time and an unwavering determination, but for many it becomes more of a hobby with some income, or an outright loss. The question I have yet to find an answer to is this, are women more likely to be successful with an MLM company, or by creating their own start-up? I would love to hear other people’s thoughts on the pros and cons of MLM vs. building your own start-up.

**In case you are wondering, yes, I have signed up for an MLM company myself. I have signed up under Young Living Essential Oils. I use essential oils in my home regularly, but no I am not committed to Young Living as the only quality brand, nor do I try to push their products. If this is something you are interested in, feel free to check out the Young Living link, and use my membership number if you support the whole MLM chain (11944326) 😊
